Island Hopping in Greece

Wondering where to go in Greece? Island hopping!

If you want to see the best of what Greece has to offer, you can’t go wrong with island hopping. Greece has the most convenient ferry system that lets you explore most of the islands in days.

If you have a week or two to get to know Greek culture, I recommend visiting some of the main islands like Santorini and Mykonos and spend at least 5 days in each.

GREECE – TOP DESTINATIONS

  • Santorini

Santorini has its own airport that’s about a 30 minutes drive from Oia (pronounced ee`yah, the main part of the island), but flying to Athens and then taking the ferry over to an island might be an easier and cheaper option. Most hotels and airbnbs will arrange for an airport pick up so you don’t get lost.

Oia, Santorini

First of all, Santorini is the most famous Greek island and it is touristy AF. Oia is crowded (even in a slow season), full of tourists from all over the world and more expensive than most other islands. That being said, you cannot beat the views and sunset in Santorini. It almost brings me to tears thinking about how magical this place is.

Depending on your budget, you can get a cute and cozy AirBnB and still be right in the middle of it all. The prices start from $40 depending on the amount of space, view and amenities.

If you want to chill and just enjoy the view, I recommend splurging on a nicer place. However, if you know you’ll be out and about everyday, no reason to waste $$$. Get a small place and don’t worry about the views. All clubs, restaurants, and vista points will provide that for you anyway.

Where to stay:

For couples – The Studio

For groups – Luxury Villa

Adults only – White Pearl Cavalieri

  • Mykonos

Mykonos is the party island and is full of clubs, bars, beach bars, etc. If you’re looking to party, go to Mykonos between June and September.

The place to stay in Mykonos is Mykonos Town (awesome nightlife, lots of great restaurants, cafes, shops, and the beach). The best beach towns in Mykonos are Ornos and Platis Gialos (both have great sand, good restaurants, and wonderful hotels).

Make sure to rent an ATV for a few days and explore the island. It’s so worth it! Most hotels will provide you with a guide for all rentals, tours, and places to see. All you have to do is meet the guy to get the bike/ATV from and go on your adventure. The countryside is beautiful and you can go around the whole island in a day!

Getting around Greece:

https://www.go-ferry.com is your best friend to coordinate the transfer between islands. Two-three hours and you’re in a new place.

The ferry takes about 2 hours and costs $65 per person one way (Mykonos to Santorini). If you rent a car, you can bring the car with you at extra cost.

You will have so much fun island hopping in Greece! I highly recommend planning free smaller day trips. Other islands to check out while you’re in Greece:

Naxos

Milos

Paros

 Food in Greece

The quality of produce in Greece is unbelievable. Everything tastes so fresh! Make sure to try the basics like Greek salad, gyros, dolmades and souvlaki. I promise it’s nothing like US food.

Always listen to the locals and try whatever they recommend! Greeks are friendly and truly appreciate everyone visiting their county and respecting the culture.
